Our plastic compounding process

At Nenplas, we compound our own raw PVC materials which allows us to colour match the final result to the customer’s exact finish and specification requirements. We don’t rely on external suppliers meaning we’re in full control of the colour matching process, quantities and lead times. 

Our in-house compounding capabilities work at scale. In the last year alone, we manufactured 4500 tonnes of virgin material and 500 tonnes of recycled plastics supporting a wide variety of project requirements. In addition to PVC compounding, we also process a vast range of thermoplastics including ABS, Styrene, PP, HDPE, TPU, ASA, Acrylic and PC.

One feature that makes us unique at Nenplas is our ability to exact colour match plastic extrusions in our on-site compounding lab. 

Our in-house PVC compounding plant was a strategic decision made a number of years ago, with the aim of offering the greatest PVC extrusion services to our customers. It provides customers with ultimate flexibility and fast turnaround on small or high volume material batch quantities, as well as the capacity of colour matching plastic extrusion designs to any RAL, Pantone or visual colour reference. 

Whilst we can manufacture custom extrusions in any material that you require, as plastic compounders in the UK we also have the ability to offer unique PVC formulations.

In addition to our PVC compounding capabilities, we have dedicated raw material testing equipment and can help customers develop and test new materials to meet specific requirements, including such for weather resistant plastic, impact resistant materials and heat resistant compounds. 

Our capabilities of testing raw materials help confirm consistency before extrusion begins, ensuring the compounded plastic meets required performance standards for the customer’s intended use. This means any potential issues are identified early and we reduce production risk while supporting consistent results across different batch sizes.

The ability to provide this service in-house means testing is carried out alongside compounding, allowing for faster feedback during development and colour matching and greater control over any formulation changes if such are needed. As a result, our development timelines are significantly shorter compared to third-party testing routes.

    In-House Material Compounding FAQs

    Plastic compounding is the practice of blending base polymers together using various reinforcements or additives (e.g. colourants, glass fibers, etc.) to create custom formulations. These can have various performance features depending on application and project requirements like durability, flexibility, resistance to UV light and more.

    Nenplas compounds our own PVC raw material in-house, however we also process a wide range of other bought-in plastics including ABS, Styrene, PP, HDPE, TPU, ASA, Acrylic and PC.

    Nenplas has invested in an in-house PVC compounding plant enabling us to offer the highest quality compounding services to our customers without relying on third- party suppliers. This means we have full control over formulation, colour, batch size and performance while reducing lead times.

    What’s more, we can offer a compounding capability at true production scale with 4,500 tonnes or virgin 500 tonnes of recycled compounds produced annually giving customers confidence when it comes to long-term supply and repeatability.

    In-house material compounding allows us to have direct control over PVC formulation, consistency and colour and gives us the ability to adjust components to meet your specific performance requirements. This process means fewer variables compared to relying on third-party compounders and shorter lead times as there’s no dependency on external PVC suppliers.
